August Birthstone: Peridot

The official birthstone for August is Peridot, a gemstone associated with growth, prosperity, love, loyalty and protection. The origin of ‘peridot’ is not clear but may come from the Arabic word “faridat”, which means “gem.”

Unlike most other gemstones that form in the Earth's crust, Peridot originates deep within the Earth's mantle, forming over millions of years. The only other gem that forms at these depths is diamonds. During volcanic eruptions the Peridot crystals are carried to the Earth's surface and deposited in the basalt rock once the magma cools and solidifies. In rare cases, raw Peridot stones have also been found embedded in the matrix of pallasitic meteorites, such as the Jepara meteorite discovered on the island of Java.

Besides being a meaningful August birthday gift, Peridot jewelry is also given to celebrate a 16th wedding anniversary.

August Birthstone Color: Green

The color of the August birthstone Peridot is green, ranging from shades of brownish to yellowish green. This stone also known as Olivine, named after its primary hue of olive green and it is one of the few gemstones that only occur in one color. Peridot is the gem quality of the mineral forsterite, and the green shade is determined by its iron composition.

August Birthstone: Spinel

The second official birthstone for August, Spinel, was added to the birthstone list in 2016. Spinel colors are mostly in the orange to red and pink range, but it also occurs in shades of purple, blue and green. Red Spinel and Ruby are both colored by chromium and are very similar in many respects, thus can be easily confused. The Black Prince's Ruby in the British Crown Jewels is in fact made up of a very small Ruby embedded in mostly red Spinel.

The Spinel gemstone can be found in both metamorphic and igneous rocks. During the metamorphism of magnesium-rich limestone deposits into harder dolomite marble; aluminum, oxygen, and magnesium crystallize into Spinel. This process takes place over millions of years and is the more common origin of Spinel gems. In some rare cases, the same elements occur in mafic igneous rocks, also resulting in the formation of Spinel stones. The varying amount of chromium, iron and magnesium present when the gemstones formed result in the many beautiful, varied colors of Spinel. The main countries where Spinel is found are India, Madagascar, Mayanmar (Burma) and Sri Lanka.

Synthetic Spinal has been manufactured since 1910 and can be used to produce imitation rubies and diamonds.

Alternative August Birthstone: Sardonyx

The alternative and traditional birthstone for August, Sardonyx, is a variety of Agate with reddish brown bands (sard) alternating with black (onyx) or white bands.

Sardonyx stone originates through a combination of geological processes involving the deposition of silica-rich solutions. These solutions flow through rock cavities and fractures and the minerals deposit over millions of years, causing alternating layers of reddish-brown Sard (a type of chalcedony) and white or black Onyx to form. These distinctive layers create the banded appearance characteristic of the Sardonyx gemstone.

The Sardonyx Mountains of India are one of the main sources of Sardonyx and other countries include Australia, Brazil, China, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Ural Mountains of Russia, Uruguay and the USA.

Due to the layered structure Sardonyx is suitable for carving cameos and intaglios, which were often fashioned into wax seals in Roman times. The word "Sardonyx" is derived from Greek words "sard' meaning 'reddish-brown' and "onyx" meaning 'claw', possibly due to the traditional use of this attractive stone in carvings.
