Ruby - the July gemstone
Rough ruby is found in limestone and in gem gravels and the most well known deposits are in Myanmar (Burma) where rubies have an exceptional color and a glowing fluorescence.
Rubies are also found in Australia, Africa (Kenya, Madagascar and Tanzania), United States, Russia and Asia (Afghanistan, Cambodia, India, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam). The shade of red color of a ruby can indicate its country of origin.
Ruby belongs to the corundum mineral group, which is the group of sapphires and in fact a ruby could be called a red sapphire. Ruby crystals form in a six-sided (hexagonal) barrel shape with flat or pointed ends.
The hardness of ruby on the Mohs scale is a high nine, second only to diamond at ten, which is the hardest natural substance known to man.
Rough uncut ruby stones are used as healing crystals, set into fashion jewelry or unusual pieces added to rock collections.
Smaller, lower grade stones might be polished and tumbled and used in crafts or handmade jewelry.
Larger, higher grade stones are cut by lapidary experts into cabochons or faceted and set in gold or silver fine jewelry.
Ruby is the gemstone for the 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries.
