Sapphire is one of the four highly valuable precious gemstones and is most well known for its deep blue color variety. However Sapphire is a form of corundum and there are many other colors of corundum known as ‘fancy sapphires’. The exception is red corundum which is in fact the ruby gemstone and is not included with fancy sapphires.
The origin of the word 'sapphire' appears to come from Latin sapphirus and Greek sappheiros meaning 'blue' or 'precious stones'.

Brilliant blue Sapphires were found historically in the remote mountainous regions of Kashmir of northern India.
Today most high quality Sapphires come from the Asian countries of Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, Thailand and Cambodia and the African country of Madagascar.
Commercial grade Sapphires are found in East Africa, Australia and Montana, USA.
