September Birthstone Color: Deep Blue

The September birthstone color of deep blue comes from the blue Sapphire gemstone. Sapphire is a form of the mineral corundum and there are many other colors of corundum known as ‘fancy sapphires’. The exception is red corundum which is in fact the ruby gemstone and treated separately to other sapphires. After diamond, corundum is the next hardest mineral and is used in abrasives due to its high durability.

Brilliant blue Sapphires were found historically in the remote mountainous regions of Kashmir of northern India. Today most high quality Sapphires come from the Asian countries of Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, Thailand and Cambodia and the African country of Madagascar.  Commercial grade Sapphires are found in East Africa, Australia and Montana, USA.
